the first alarm rang at about 10:12 p.m. Monday of a fire at the abandoned Studebaker - EMF building at Piquette and John R, near Endicott.
By 11 p.m., the fire was a three-alarm blaze, but it quickly developed into five alarms.
300 photos currently uploading to flickr. hopefully the queue will finish and won't error out while i'm sleeping. sneak will add more than his fair share, saw him down at the fire as well. i managed to get video of the entire corner building's collapse. will be putting that up tomorrow as well. we were there for about four and a half hours before i ran through a 1gb memory card and two rechargeable camera batteries. unfortunately, it was time to go. now at 4:33am it is still burning just as bright as when we left, as far as i can see from my roof and the news reports coming in. apparently the propane tanks just recently blew and not only has it taken the historic studebaker plant and piquette market, but it has just spread to the model T plant as well, but i don't know if it has claimed the whole structure or not. The model T plant also contains millions of medical records that are stored in the building for Henry Ford Health Systems.
the sirens are still wailing.
it is going to be one hot summer - solstice occurred under a blood red, full-moon apocalyptic sky.
more soon when i get my brain properly around the enormity of the loss of detroit's history...and the places left unexplored. according to channel 7 apparently the fire is now "controlled." the top of 411 Piquette (adjacent building) were artists' studios, where at the very least their windows were blown out from the heat and were smoke and water damaged beyond repair. i wonder if there is a way prints can be sold from the photographers that shot this fire as a benefit to the other artists who lost their life's work. if so, i hope those of us who documented can organize something to help.
more here as well.

Wow...just, wow.
Good work in capturing all of this. Where is this in relation to your place?
some excellent foto here, b. I expected no less.

it wasn't very near to my place, although the fire was so huge it appeared to be much closer than it was - we kept driving and following it expecting to be right next to it, it was quite an optical illusion due to the size - it was probably a good three miles away.
Thank you!
