anyway, ok, preamble-ish excuses done.
let's attempt some facsimile of chronological order. the proper nyc update never happened, so let's start with a picture:
band picture much? photo © jeffrey paul. nothing like nerds on the beach. even though i grew up an hour outside of new york city, i have never been to coney island - i have to say going during the mermaid parade was most certainly an event to behold - i don't know what was more of a freakshow, us or them. regardless, good times were had by all, and bumper cars were more fun than grown adults should ever have.
we applied spf 9000 (and some of us had luxurious parasols) and somehow we remained relatively unscathed, but i'm still convinced my freckles will join together by the end of this summer. the rest of the time was spent over wonderful walks through the park, indulging in culinary delights and indulging in an array of parties, after parties and after-after parties. the hospitality of friends was most excellent, i got to see more of the city than i ever had (i'm terribly unfamiliar with brooklyn - so nice and so much more "breathing room") and the company, was of course, most excellent as well. there was a grand plot to hijack the winged silver bird to barcelona on the ride back, but that will have to wait til next time.
fast forward to thursday which was the first evening of tastefest or dorkfest, rather, and more shennanigans ensured than typical...then again, nothing is ever typical in that camp.
one of our beloved sonic curators got a little accidental lovetap in the face with a broken bottle, thus beginning this weekend's theme of all things blood.
and thensolvent rounded out the night with an amazing (and pleasantly extended!) set. canadians are funny, regardless of what you all say.
friday brought a great set at oslo (nyc round 2) by ryan elliot and then the adventuresome of us headed off to see a 2:45am showing of Land of the Dead (what tripe) at the Ford-Wyoming Drive-In, the largest drive-in in the country (and probably the weirdest.) even though it was crap for a zombie movie, not nearly enough blood, guts or plot, but the experience was quite surreal and *so* well worth it, and my first time to a drive-in ever! such a deprived child...
saturday was more tastefest where there was real tasting going on for a change rather than debauchery - andouille sausage and rice, alligator medallions with dijon mustard sauce, bread pudding with bourbon sauce and a chocolate, honey and ice cream covered waffle. caloric intake good. later was a bbq at christos' house, where scheming for the next evening would prevail.
so following the theme of zombified red, sticky and full of hemoglobin.... was a holiday edition of instersate at forans, with a special cast of characters including mike doyle, christos, darkcube, sneak, t. linder and your hostess, yours truly. trouble waiting to happen much? why all the mess? well, why not! turning a simple night of playing records into an excursion of really bad, near performance art guarantees much fun to be had by all. who can go wrong with stage-blood filled squirt guns, explosives, bullhorns and rubber bats?
On the 8th Day, God said, "Let there be bats, disco and blood orgies... and it was Good." - denis baldwin.
what was typically a night of obscure post-punk, no wave and electro devolved into electro, 80's and ravetastic anthem hits that had posteriors-a-shakin'.
full set of bloody mess here.
side note: the next installment of the absurdity now known as dethlab will happen Saturday September 24 at the Majestic - T. raumschmiere, Ectomorph, mike doyle + bethany (aka dethlab) will provide antics for you. and July 15th at bandwidth will also be miss toybreaker playing records badly. so come out and play.
(ok, back to chronological order. /spreading of word)
and finally monday was the day of rest, well sort of. in lieu of played the last afternoon of the tastefest and pleasant naps were taken on the grass while storms of doom lurked in the background.
but the excitement didn't stop there, we headed off to see Mr. and Mrs Smith (yes kids, i saw TWO movies in one weekend, oh the horror...but who can argue with zombies and assassins?) chocolate covered espresso beans are far better than popcorn. *bounce!* and just as the credits were rolling, the theater caught on fire. of course we thought it was a joke...
the end.
