another one down

Crap! The original Society for Arts and Crafts is coming down right now. I unfortunately can't take the time tonight to go document; this is one, I really would have liked to have seen. It was probably not salveageable, but still such a beautiful part of history. With my close ties to Cranbrook (and now CCS), this one especially hurts.

sac

The Society was founded in 1906 by George Booth and built in 1916 by architects William Stratton and Maxwell Gyrlls; by the 1960 most activities had moved to the current CCS campus and in 2003 it was ruined by fire.

More on the Arts and Crafts history in the Detroit area.

A few weeks ago there was also an eerily predictive story in Real Detroit Weekly about the next buildings speculated to be demolished.
