In honor of today's "holiday", I'll be picking up a few bottles of Brewery De Block's Satan Ale (red, of course) tonight from Holiday Market. Brewery De Block has been active in Belgium since the 14th century. Eeeeeeeeevil, I say! Then we're going to grill a whole bunch of nice juicy MEATFLESH,(homemade fresh sausages I hear) which has to add a point or two of evil, no?

“I couldn’t be happier! Ever since leaving heaven, I’ve been getting a bit of a bad rap. Then, for a long time, it seemed like no one was paying much attention to me at all. My agents were pushing me to start doing Lifetime movies and late night TV ads, and I was beginning to give it some serious thought. But all of a sudden, evil is back in style. With all of the press I’m getting these days, I couldn’t think of a better time to reintroduce my ales. Maybe they’ll help people to take a second look, and think about who Satan really is.”

Unlike the other famous devilish Belgian brews – Duvel (Moortgaat) and Lucifer (Riva) – it is made in a very small family-run brewery. The very homey De Block brewery turns out only 7000 hectoliters of beer a year (compared to about 400,000 annually at Moortgaat and about 150,000 at Riva. It’s quite a charming place, a turn-of-the-century steam-powered brewery that still has most of its original equipment, including a classic wood-clad coolship that is still in use. We've been enjoying a whole host of excellent Belgian beers lately, I doubt this one will disappoint (and probably should be on our rider from here on out)! A few local establishments have quite fine lists of great Belgian beers, most notably Slow's in Detroit and Red Coat Tavern in Royal Oak. Red Coat has both Piraat Ale (arrrrrrg!) which is one of my new favorites and Skullsplitter Orkney Ale. Both are perfect fuel for conquering and pillaging (or maybe the descimation of your own noggin...)
