(steel, 1998)
a lot of people have noticed a change in the focus of my work recently. although i have been known to pick up "what is in the air" design wise, it goes a bit deeper than that. there will always be cross-pollenization of ideas between individuals who are close and within groups of artists who are creating at one time. right now i'm looking back a bit, to work that was done before i entered grad school six years ago. not to sound melodramatic, but i am making peace with that time and reconnecting a bit with where i left off. when i started school, i pretty quickly abandoned my old way of working probably because at that point, i really sucked at taking criticism (and i sure got a lot), and as a result i moved to a more comfortable vernacular to work within in order to avoid that conflict and (eek) to fit in better with what i perceived as the "fashion" of the place. right or wrong, it happened, and it is all part of the experience, i just feel like i need to be a bit more honest, to look back a bit and examine where i left off when i was working independently, now through the lens of greater refinement and experience i have in hand.
