Demolition Means Progress

Uhhh...yeah. Right, for the alleged improvent of public image for one goddamned football game. DetroitFunk says it best, please check it for a great read and some even better pictures. I won't even attempt to regurgitate. What we lost was a beautiful limestone and terra cotta building still full of so much history, still quite reasonably structurally sound, done away with in the most hack-job shady way possible, how most things are done around here.

The most touching part of this story is how the building kept having her way with the wrecking ball - broke it off the cable at least three times completely halting the demolition process.

Had to work late tonight, so no pictures, I hope to get an early start in the morning and get some of my own. Better late than never?

To me, what is going to make a much worse impression on visitors to Detroit during the superbowl weekend is the fact that the RAMADA downtown, yeah the one that houses City Club - is going for $300+ per night and is 100% sold out. News of the state of disrepair of that shithole should travel fast. Coincidentally the Ramada sign was removed on Saturday, as was it's listing from Ramada's main booking site - I wonder if the franchise finally got pulled?

EDIT: The images in the previous post are from the Sanders building, not the Donovan building. After doing a little research on Detroityes, it seems the are not preserving the adjoining Donovan building, and it is expected to be torn down today. Considering how things go 'round these parts, that would probably be more like now in the middle of the night. About to go put on warm clothes...

as it were, the explorers that i came into town with noted the same thing; they'd stayed at the ramada last year, on MLK day weekend, at $90 or so a night, and were disgusted with the service / cost ratio. after a quick look around, our guess was that the franchise WAS pulled, and the Detroit Ramada Inn is screwed. par for course!

also not so coincidentally, the owner of said ex-Ramada hotel is also the owner of many of downtown's finest abandoned structures, i.e. the broderick tower.
